Srinagar-Jammu highway opened for one-way traffic

JAMMU/SRINAGAR: The strategic Srinagar-Jammu highway was restored for one-way traffic on Wednesday following improvement in the weather after two days of heavy snowfall, an official said.
Brigadier TPS Rawat, chief engineer of border roads organization (BRO), which maintains the highway told IANS: “The highway has been restored for one-way traffic. Stranded vehicles will be allowed to move towards their destinations today (Wednesday).”
“Light vehicles have also started moving on the highway from Jammu to Srinagar,” he said.
“To avoid road blocks on the highway, no vehicle will be allowed to move from Srinagar to Jammu on Wednesday,” Rawat added.
Due to heavy snowfall and landslides during the last two days, the over 300-km highway had remained closed for vehicular traffic.
Around 300 trucks and oil tankers were stranded at some places on the highway.
The highway is the landlocked Kashmir Valley’s only road link with the rest of the country as all essential supplies are routed through it.
