Tear-gassing, Clashes After Friday Prayers

Protest demonstrations were held at several places in Kashmir today in response to a call given by Mutahida Majlis-e-Mushawarat (MMM). At some place police burst smoke shells and resorted to lathi-charge to disperse protesters.

Reports said that clashes occurred between the protesters and police in Old city of Srinagar after Friday prayers. The incident occurred after Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chairman Hurriyat Conference (M), left after leading a procession from Jamia Masjid. The protesters pelted stones on police and security personnel at Nowhatta and Rajouri Kadal.
Police and CRPF fired smoke shells and resorted to lathi-charge. A minor boy was injured when he was allegedly beaten up by para-military force personnel. He was arrested in an injured condition. The people got more agitated after the beating of the boy and his arrest. They fought pitched battles with the men in uniform. Reinforcement of forces was rushed to the affected areas to bring the situation under control.
Reports from Baramulla said that after Friday prayers groups of youth surfaced at several places. They held demonstrations and pelted stones on police and CRPF. The cops swung into action and sealed the four important bridges in the town and also stopped the movement of the people. Following improvement in situation the two bridges were reopened. But tension mounted again in the town as demonstration was held and clashes occurred. Cops burst smoke shells to disperse the protesters. The intermittent clashes continued till late this evening.
Normal life remained disrupted in Baramulla after the clashes. The shopkeepers pulled down their shutters and vehicular movement was also disrupted.
