Ramadhan begins with religious fervor

Guv, Omar, GOC Chinar Corps greet people  DD Kashir to air special programme

The holy month of Ramadhan begins in Jammu and Kashmir tomorrow with the first day of fasting. Ramadhan is the 9th month of Islamic calendar.
In Arab countries, Europe and America, the month of fasting began today. As the Ramadhan moon could not be sighted in India and Pakistan on Saturday evening, it was decided by the religious scholars that the first day of fasting in JK would be on Monday.
In the summer capital, Srinagar, people were seen buying dates, fruits, juices, and other essentials for the holy month. People were seen readying for the first Taraweeh (special late-night prayers) this evening. 
Like last year, the month of fasting coincides with summer heat. People in J&K have to fast slightly over 16 hours a day from 3:39 am, the end of Sehri (pre-dawn meals) to 7:50 pm Iftaar (breaking of fast).
In the winter capital – Jammu – scorching heat coupled with more than 80 percent humidity is being termed as a major concern for those gearing up for fasting. “It is very humid in Jammu this year. But we will fast,” said Shehbaz Khan of KhatikanaTalab, Jammu.
Governor NN Vohra has greeted people on the commencement of the holy month and hoped that the auspicious month would be a harbinger of peace, amity, communal harmony, brotherhood, progress and prosperity in the state. 
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also greeted people on the eve of beginning of Ramadhan and prayed for peace and development in the state.
Senior PDP leader and Member Parliament Tariq Hameed Karra also extended greetings to the people on the beginning of Ramadhan.
GOC Chinar Corps Lt Gen SubrataSaha and soldiers of Chinar Corps also extended best wishes to the people of Kashmir on the beginning of Ramadhan.  
Special Ramadhan program on Doordarshan
Associated Media (AM) — Media and Communication Centre will telecast Ramadhan special programme ‘AhlanRamadhan’ on DD Kashir from today. 
Grater Kashmir will be the media partner of the program. The programme has special attractions including recitation of Quran, information about Iftar recipes, quiz for viewers with each episode giving an overview of the various aspects of Ramadhan. The programme with duration of 30 minutes would go on air everyday at 7 pm.
 “We expect to attract a large share of the audience during the holy month of Ramadhan, given the quality and rich content of the proposed programme that shall target all age groups, who value Islamic principles and their desire for celebration and entertainment,” said TariqueBhat, AM Chief Executive Officer. 
He said the programme would include children shows, quiz competitions with prizes, health tips, Iftar recipes, diverse Ramadhan ethos anecdotes, which together enhance the grandeur of celebrations of Ramadhan. 
The programme is sponsored by Tourism Department, Voluntary Medical Society, JK, Yateem Trust, Greenway Enterprises, Harshna Naturals, Rahim Motors and JK State Cooperative Bank.
