Hindus, Sikhs clash in Anantnag, several injured
The members of two minority communities Sunday clashed at the disputed Surya temple, which also houses a Gurudwara in Mattan Anantnag causing minor injuries to several people.
The situation was brought under control after police and officials from the district administration visited the spot.
“They were made to solve the issue themselves, peacefully.” said Deputy Commissioner Anantnag, Swagat Biswas, adding the situation is normal in the area.
According to reports Supreme Court of India has directed both the communities not to carry out any new construction within the disputed territory.
Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (GPC) this morning tried to replace the Nishan Sahib (the flag-pole outside the Gurdwara). They alleged the temple management members attacked them with stones injuring many.
Police however refuted reports of injuries to anybody, “Nobody was injured. We brought the situation under control just in time.” said a senior police official.
Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee alleged that while the temple management has been carrying out rampant construction, in violation to the Supreme Court order, the objection to replace a flag-police is completely uncalled for.
The members of the temple management refuted the allegations.
“There was no stone pelting from our side. We opposed their move to replace the Nishan Sahib very peacefully and we were well within our rights,” said a member of the temple management wishing anonymity.
He said there has been no violation of the court orders from their side.
