PM visit: 80 SPG commandos to oversee security

200 vehicles requisitioned from Govt Deptts for Modi’s visit

A team of around 80 commandos from the elite Special Protection Group (SPG) including its top-ranking officers are set to arrive in Jammu and Kashmir from Tuesday to take over the venues scheduled to be visited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the State on July 4.
Highly placed sources in the state police said the elite SPG commandos, entrusted with the security of the Prime Minister, will start arriving here from tomorrow, ahead of the PM’s visit.  
“SPG commandos will start arriving in batches from tomorrow, both in Srinagar and Jammu,  to take control of the security of places to be visited by Modi during his day-long visit to the state ,” they said, adding that three-tier security arrangements would be put in place for the PM’s visit.
According to them, the inner-most ring of the security will be looked after by SPG personnel. 
The General Administration Department (GAD) has requisitioned around 200 vehicles from various government departments in the state to be kept at the disposal of the PM’s security team.
“The SPG would sanitize all the places to be visited by Modi,” they said, adding the SPG officials would hold threadbare discussions with the state police and the central and state agencies to finalize the security arrangements for the PM’s visit.
A top police official disclosed that 80 SPG personnel are scheduled to be deployed in JK for Modi’s visit. They include six Inspectors General (IGs), four Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs) and two Additional Inspectors General (AIGs).
SPG took over security of Modi, moments after he was sworn as Prime Minister on May 26. The 3,000-strong SPG is mandated to secure serving and former prime ministers and members of their immediate families.
Earlier, during his electioneering for the Lok Sabha polls, Modi was protected by more than 100 National Security Guard (NSG) commandos.
