‘Funds worth crores embezzled in Wullar lake project’

Senior leader of Peoples Conference (PC) Iqbal Lone Wednesday demanded that work on restoration and conservation of Wullar lake be immediately stopped as “the funds worth crores were being swindled by the concerned officers.”
In a statement, Lone said: “Wullar has become a garbage-dumping site for people and authorities. Illegal construction is another problem. Wullar Conservation and Management Authority (WCMA) established by the state government in 2012 to restore dying Wullar lake is going on the lines of Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA).”
He added: “The Wullar conservation project has failed to take off due to the government apathy. The officers posted in Wullar Authority are only concerned about loot while the restoration and conservation work has taken a back seat.”
The PC leader said allegations of huge embezzlement of funds in the WCMA by the concerned officers has put a question mark on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s assertions that his government was serious to restore Asia’s largest fresh water body Wullar to its pristine glory. He demanded that “so-called restoration and conservation work” be immediately stopped and a probe be initiated against all the officers and engineers posted in the WCMA in the last three years.
The PC leader threatened to launch an agitation over the issue soon if the government failed to take action against the corrupt officers who were busy in looting the funds meant for the Wullar conservation.
