National Conference raises pitch against NFSA

The National Conference today raised its pitch against the National Food Security Act, accusing the coalition government of snatching food from people of the state.
“Today people are worried about the food security Act,” NC president and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah told reporters at Shangus in Anantnag district.
Omar described the government’s statement that the NC was behind the protests against the food Act as “unfortunate”. “Imagine in Srinagar city alone there are 3 lakh people whose food is being snatched. If this is the situation in Srinagar, elsewhere the situation will be the same too,” said Omar. Omar was in Shangus to address a convention of party workers.
Protests against the food Act have gathered momentum in the past few days. In Srinagar, residents have been holding agitations opposing the Act. In Maisuma, protesters, including women, clashed with the police and torched ration cards.
Omar threatened to oppose the government decision tooth and nail. “We will keep raising the issue in and outside the Assembly to pressurise the government to revisit its decision, and return to people what is being snatched from them,” he said.
“People have taken to the streets to protest against the food Act and we want the government to reconsider its decision because the Act will harm people and not benefit them.” In his address to the workers, Omar termed the government’s allegations that the Bill was passed during his regime as completely baseless.
