Avalanche hits Machhil in north Kashmir killing two studentsA teenage boy died and two others were injured after an avalanche struck the forest area of Machhil in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Saturday morning.

A police officer told Srinagar based news agency GNS that the avalanche hit the Chuntiwari Balla area of Machhil in the frontier district, resulting in on-spot death of a 15-year-old boy.

After the news spread in the area, all the locals and police rushed to the spot and retrieved the body, the official said.

The injured boys were immediately taken to Machhil hospital where from they were referred to Sub-district hospital Kupwara for further treatment.

The incident occurred when the three teenagers (Darsgah students) were on their way towards Madrassa Taleem-ul-Quran in the area, the officer said.

The officer identified the deceased as Mehrajudin Khan (15) son of Bashir Ahmad of Katwara Machil and the injured have been identified as Javid Ahmad Khan (14) son of Younis Khan of Khali Balla, Machil and Abdul Rashid Mir (14) son of Abdul Rehman of Chuntiwari Balla, Machhil.

Pertinently, the local administration had issued the avalanche warning for Machhal sector as well as Chokibal- Tangdhar, Keran sector, Gurez sector, Naugam-Kaiya in the frontier district.
