Jammu turns politically alive ahead of Guv meet

Political corridors abuzz for first time after Mufti’ s death

Jammu turns politically alive ahead of meetings with GuvJammu has become politically alive after Governor NN Vohra invited leaders of two largest political parties in the legislature — PDP and BJP — for separate talks on government formation.
The hustle and bustle in political corridors has returned after a gap of almost one and a half months. Late Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed attended his last official engagements at the Civil Secretariat before leaving for Kashmir on December 17, 2015.
Mufti, who undertook a more than six-hour-long hectic tour of Srinagar city amid sub-zero temperatures on December 22 last year, was shifted to AIIMS in Delhi on December 24, where breathed his last on January 7.
His death led to political uncertainty in the state after his political heir and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti showed reluctance to take over as the Chief Minister. After the PDP and BJP did not clear their stand on government formation, the state came under Governor’s rule on January 8.
Today, on her first visit to Jammu since the death of her father, Mehbooba, who was scheduled to meet Governor NN Vohra at Raj Bhawan this evening, reached Jammu amid a politically surcharged atmosphere and high expectations that the PDP and BJP — coalition partners in the previous government headed by the late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed — would again forge an alliance and form the government.
Soon after her arrival, mediapersons descended on Jammu and tracked the movement of the PDP president to keep a close watch on every individual visiting the State Guest House, where she was staying.
In the evening, the focus was shifted to Raj Bhawan, where leaders of both parties were scheduled to arrive and hold separate meetings with the Governor to clear their stand on government formation.
Similarly, all major opposition parties, including the National Conference, Congress and National Panthers Party, were closely watching political developments unfolding in the winter capital.
