Imposters collect villager’s bank details, promise funds transfer

As commoners are facing hardships due to demonetisation, some unscrupulous elements are all out to take advantage of the prevailing situation to adjust their “surplus money” in bank accounts of gullible rural people.
One such incident was reported in the border village of Rampur where some unidentified persons collected bank account numbers, Aadhaar card details, BPL card numbers and other documents from over 100 innocent villagers with a promise that some amount would be deposited in each of their accounts under a special scheme.
Vivek Kumar, a shopkeeper of the village, said on Friday a group of unidentified persons, posing as bank officials, started door-to-door survey and collected details of the bank accounts and Aadhaar and BPL cards. “The group targeted only poor and ignorant families,” he said, adding that they collected the details of around 100 persons, especially poor and BPL families.
As the visiting group promised to deposit amount in the accounts of poor people, there was competition among innocent people to share all details about their accounts. Before some aware persons got information about the visit of the bank “team”, the group managed to give a slip. Some villagers immediately contacted managements of the local banks, who said they did not depute any such team in any village. The bank officials will forward the complaint to the authorities concerned tomorrow.
Octogenarian Nariyano Devi of the same village said fake bank officials told her that the Union Government had started a special scheme under which amount ranging from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh would be deposited in the accounts of poor people living on the border and adjoining areas.
As the group sought details about her bank account, she and her whole family shared information with the visiting team. Not only Nariyno Devi, there were many other women who were enthusiastic to share the information with the visiting group.
It is believed that these fake bank officials have collected the details about bank accounts of the villagers to adjust their black money.
