Sopore Massacre can never be forgotten: Syed Ali Shah Geelani

Separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani today described the 1993 Sopore massacre as a “barbaric and inhuman incident”, saying “anybody with a human heart can never ever forget it”.
“Kashmir has hardly witnessed such a barbaric and inhuman incident and not only Kashmir but anybody with a human heart can also never forget it,” Geelani said in a statement recalling the killing of civilians in north Kashmir’s Sopore town in January 1993.
The incident had happened when militants had attacked security forces resulting in the death of one soldier.
“Inhuman forces shuttered down the nearby shops and burnt alive all shopkeepers,” Geelani said.
“Humanity may have never witnessed such a heinous crime when a toddler snatched from the lap of his mother was thrown into the flames and when the hapless mother protested she too was silenced forever by bullets,” Geelani said.
Geelani alleged that the “trigger-happy forces hardly differentiate on the party affiliations and they don’t spare anybody”.
“The Kashmiri Muslims identity is more than enough to legalise such lethal punishment,” he said.
