Student Protests continue in Sopore for 2nd day, Authorities order closure

Authorities order closure of two schools, college today

The student protests continued in Sopore for the second consecutive day today.
The protests erupted in Bomai village when students of Government Higher Secondary School, Bomai, took out a protest and raised pro-freedom slogans. The students marched towards the Bomai police post and staged a massive protest, resulting in clashes between policemen and protesting youths.
Superintendent of Police, Sopore, Harmeet Singh said students of Higher Secondary School, Bomai, took out a protest today, but they were peacefully dispersed by the police.
Following the clashes, the authorities ordered the closure of two higher secondary schools and Degree College, Sopore, where clashed took place on Thursday, for May 5 and 6 as a precautionary measure.
“Boys Higher Secondary School, Girls Higher Secondary School and Degree College, Sopore, were closed today as a precautionary measure. We will monitor see the situation and might open them tomorrow. For now, we have announced their closure for two days,” said Chief Education Officer, Baramulla, Mushtaq Ahmad.
The student protests erupted in the Valley after the April 15 incident at Degree College, Pulwama, when students, who were opposing the setting up of a security checkpost outside the college, were beaten up by the police. The protests have failed to die down and have continued intermittently in the Valley.
