Loophole in Aadhar card processing poses security threat

A technical lacuna in making Aadhaar cards is posing a security threat to the sensitive state.
This has happened as the Information Technology Department, now tasked with making the cards, has issued instructions to the Aadhaar centres to make cards on the basis of two government-issued identity proofs. However, with the centres unable to check the genuineness of the proofs, this loophole can be misused.
Earlier the Aadhaar cards were being made on the basis of Temporary Identification Number (TIN), which was circulated to each person, who was counted during the 2011 census. At the Aadhaar card centre, the applicant had to show his TIN number, only then the card was made.
According to highly placed sources, the work for making Aadhaar cards was with the National Population Registrar.
Of the state’s 1.25 crore population, the NPR had prepared 85 lakh Aadhaar cards till May 2016. After the work was shifted to the IT Department, it issued instructions to make the cards on the basis of any two government-issued identity proofs.
“Anyone can go with two identity proofs and make an Aadhaar card. No one at the Aadhaar centre checks if the proofs are original. Bangladeshis, Rohingyas are getting Aadhaar cards just because they have managed ration cards and driving licences. Similarly, terrorists can also make it,” sources said.
