Gunfight in Fateh Kadal, Three Rebels, Policeman killed; Internet suspended, educational institutions closed

Gunfight broke out between militants and the government forces in Fateh Kadal area of Downtown Srinagar early Wednesday.

Reports said a joint team of the state police and the CRPF cordoned off Fateh Kadal after “specific information” about presence of some militants.

As soon as the forces approached the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired at them, triggering an encounter.

Three militants and a policeman were killed in a gunfight which was underway since early Wednesday in Fateh Kadal locality of downtown Srinagar, police said.

Three militants and a policeman were killed in the gunfight, ANI news agency quoted SSP Srinagar Imtiyaz Ismail Parrey as having said.

However, some reports suggested that one among the slain was a civilian who worked as an overground worker of the militants.

He said the identity of the slain is being ascertained. Reports said that Mehraj Bangroo of Fateh Kadal was among the slain militants.

The slain policeman has been identified as Kamal from Reasi, reported news agency GNS. Three CRPF personnel were injured in the gunfight.

Quoting sources, news agency GNS reported that two militants are believed to be trapped inside the area.
Meanwhile, all educational institutions have been closed and Internet suspended in the Srinagar district in view of the gunfight.
