Day 4: Protests, clashes in Nowgam

Amid restrictions, protests and clashes were reported from Nowgam area of Budgam district for the fourth consecutive day Thursday.
Reports said groups of youth took to streets in the morning and held protest demonstrations against the killing of two youth—Faisal Yusuf and Meraj-ud-Din Dar—by army at Chattergam on Monday evening.
Police and paramilitary forces had closed exit and entry points of Nowgam to prevent people from taking out protest demonstrations.
Reports however said the protests took place despite restrictions in the area and protestors were intercepted by police at several places, triggering clashes. The protestors pelted stones on police, who in turn burst tear smoke shells and dispersed them.
Pitched battles continued for the whole day, they said.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Budgam, MuhammadIrshad told Greater Kashmir that situation was by and large peaceful in Nowgam. “By-Pass was through today and situation was largely peaceful,” he said.
