Future Lawmaker Celebrates Victory With AK-47, Fires Gunshots

Omar Abdullah dares police to file FIR against ‘PDP chap’; NC concerned; Ashraf Mir denies

With former Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah daring police to register FIR into alleged firing by Peoples Democratic Party, MLA for Sonwar Muhammad Ashraf Mir during a victory procession, cops said they have started investigations.

The video footage, believed to be taken on the day election results were announced, shows Mir brandishing an AK-47 and firing gunshots to mark his victory of being the first contestant to have defeated an incumbent Chief Minister in the state. Mir won by a margin of over 4,700 votes.
“So will J&K police register a case against the gun toting MLA or will they be too scared in case he’s a minister a few days from now?” Omar wrote on micro blogging website Twitter.
“The PDP chap let off an AK 47 to celebrate his victory over me. Thank goodness I didn’t lose Beerwah!!! I wonder what they would have fired!” Omar wrote in another tweet.
However, Mir has denied having fired any rounds and accused his political rivals of producing a “doctored video”.
Police said that they have started investigations into the incident. “Concerned officials have been asked to look into the matter,” a senior police official told Greater Kashmir on the basis of anonymity.
Meanwhile, Omar’s National Conference(NC) Friday condemned the incident in the “strongest of terms”. “How can an MLA resort to firing a gun in broad daylight? Apparently the gun was handed over to Mir by a personal security officer of the J&K Police. This behavior is shocking and violates a slew of laws – most of which are non-bailable offences,” National Conference spokesman Junaid Azim Mattu said in a handout.
“However, this is not the first time Ashraf Mir has misused his personal security. More recently, Mir used his PSOs to conduct illegal search operations and beat up innocent people in Shalimar the night before the elections in Srinagar. However, tragically Mir was allowed to go scot-free that time due to the unabashed bias of a certain police officer towards PDP,” the NC spokesman said.
“Now once again there is video evidence of Mir violating the law  by firing the service weapon of a policeman and has also put the lives of dozens of people in serious risk. It remains to be seen if the J&K Police will at least try to act or will yet again turn a blind eye towards Mir’s unlawful behavior.”
Mattu said “This incident comes in the backdrop of another PDP leader and MLA, Javed Mustafa Mir brandishing an AK-47 and dressing up in military fatigue to intimidate and harass civilians in broad daylight.” “Either the J&K Police officially issues a statement that they have allowed PDP leaders to misuse their security and brandish and fire AK-47s at will or it steps up and takes legal action without any dilly-dallying. There was concrete evidence on every occasion but all such evidence was ignored by the Police. The tragic part is that there wasn’t even a semblance of an inquiry.”
“It is only proper that PDP comes up with an official stand on this incident and tells the people of the State what action it is planning to take against its leader. We expect the PDP Patron Mufti Muhammad Sayeed to speak on this issue, to render an apology on behalf of the party and to take disciplinary action against the erring PDP leader.”
The NC Spokesman demanded that the Police takes appropriate action under law against Mir and immediately registers an FIR based on the video evidence under various relevant statutes of law. “In case Mir repeats this behavior and such reckless and unlawful misuse of weapons of the J&K Police results in any loss of life, the J&K Police would be directly responsible.”
