September-2014 floods which left thousands of vehicles out-of-order mostly due to snag in the Engine Control Module when waters rose to over two floors in the City, thousands of such electronic circuits still await repairs. This has given rise to a new type of thefts: Now burglars target the ECM.
Police Monday claimed to have busted a gang of ECM thieves and recovered eight such circuit boards from their possession from Sharifabad locality of west City.
“In the past few months Police Station ParimPora received some complaints of ECM thefts of vehicles at parked in Sharief Abad area, following which a police team led by SHO Muhammad Ayoub Rather was constituted,” said a police officer.
“After rigorous investigations police got suspicion that some motor mechanics were involved in the crime. Finally this gang of three was busted,” police said.
“The trio worked as mechanic at automobile workshop and were well versed with ECM,” police said.
When contacted SHO ParimPora gave details of the modus operandi. “They would roam around at night preying for some vehicle and whenever they found any vehicle parked on the roads, they targeted it,” he said.
He said as many vehicles still lie out of order due to delay in CEM repairs or replacement, there was a big demand for the circuitry.
An FIR vide No 4/2015 under section 379 has been registered at Police Station ParimPora against the accused.
