CM Omar Abdullah Flags Off Kashmir’s First International Marathon
Srinagar, Oct 16: In a historic event, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah flagged off Kashmir’s firs ever international marathon from Polo Stadium in Srinagar. The marathon, which saw the participation of over 2,000 athletes from across the country and abroad, marks a significant milestone in promoting sports and tourism in the region. Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty was also present at the flagging ceremony, adding a touch of glamour to the event.
The marathon featured two categories: a 42-km full marathon and a 21-km half marathon. Participants included top long- distance runners from India, Asian gold medallists, and some of the best runners from Europe and Africa. The event was organized by the Department of Tourism with the aim of showcasing Kashmir’s stunning landscapes and promoting the region as a peaceful and safe destination for international events.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed his excitement and pride in hosting such a significant event. “This marathon sends a message to the world that Kashmir is open to all and is a peaceful place. We welcome tourists from different parts of the world to experience the beauty and hospitality of our region,” he said.
Suniel Shetty’s Presence
Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty, who flagged off the marathon alongside Omar Abdullah, praised the event and the region’s potential for tourism. “People want to come to Kashmir, and an event like this gives a message to the entire world that people from all over the world are coming here to participate. It’s a big thing. Kashmir is a paradise for the world,” Shetty remarked.
Promoting Tourism and Culture
The marathon not only highlighted the athletic prowess of the participants but also aimed to promote Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage. The athletes were treated to local cuisine and had the opportunity to visit iconic destinations like the Gulmarg ski resort. The event showcased Kashmir’s pristine lakes, alpine forests, and the vibrant autumn season, known as the king of four seasons in the region.
