Srinagar, December 9, 2024 – A severe cold wave has gripped Kashmir, with temperatures plummeting to record lows. The picturesque town of Gulmarg, known for its winter sports and scenic beauty, recorded a bone-chilling temperature of -9°C, making it the coldest place in the region.
The weather office has forecasted dry weather over the next 10 days, with a possibility of light snowfall in the higher reaches of the valley on December 12. The cold wave has intensified across the valley, with several areas experiencing temperatures several degrees below the freezing point.
In Srinagar, the minimum temperature dropped to -3.3°C, while Pahalgam recorded -6.8°C and Qazigund saw a low of -5.2°C. The frontier areas of north Kashmir, including Kupwara, also experienced sub-zero temperatures.
The Meteorological Department has advised caution for travelers, especially on mountainous roads that have become slippery due to frost conditions. Efforts are underway to clear snow from key routes, including the Mughal Road and Sinthan Road, which remain closed due to snow accumulation.
Despite the harsh conditions, tourists continue to flock to Gulmarg, drawn by the fresh snowfall and the promise of a winter wonderland. The tourism department is gearing up for the winter season, planning special programs and snow festivals to attract visitors.
As Kashmir braces for its harshest winter period, which begins on December 21, residents and visitors alike are preparing for the cold days ahead.
