SED Takes Action Against Private Schools for Prescribing Textbooks in Violation of Norms

Srinagar, January 5: The School Education Department (SED) has taken cognizance of numerous complaints lodged against private schools across Jammu and Kashmir for prescribing textbooks that violate established norms. In response to these complaints, the SED has issued a directive mandating all private schools to upload details of the textbooks they prescribe on their official websites within three days.

This directive comes after parents and guardians expressed growing concerns about private schools deviating from the textbooks prescribed by the Board of School Education (BOSE) and opting for costly alternatives. These deviations have not only caused financial strain on families but have also raised questions about the quality and appropriateness of the educational materials being used.

The SED’s move aims to ensure transparency and accountability in the educational materials prescribed by private schools. By requiring schools to publish textbook details online, the department seeks to provide parents with clarity and prevent any further discrepancies.

A senior SED official stated, “This action is being taken to address the grievances of parents and ensure that private schools adhere to the norms set by the Board of School Education. Schools are expected to comply with the directive and provide full details of the prescribed textbooks on their websites within the stipulated time frame.”

The official added that schools failing to comply with the directive would face strict action, including potential penalties and revocation of their registration. The SED has also set up a monitoring cell to oversee the implementation of the directive and address any issues that may arise.

Parents have welcomed the SED’s intervention, expressing relief that their concerns are being addressed. “It’s high time that schools are held accountable for their actions. This move will help us ensure that our children receive quality education without being burdened by unnecessary costs,” said a concerned parent.

Private school associations, meanwhile, have expressed willingness to cooperate with the SED’s directive. A representative from the Private Schools Association stated, “We understand the concerns of parents and are committed to working with the SED to ensure compliance with the norms. We believe that transparency is key to maintaining trust between schools and parents.”

The SED’s directive is part of a broader effort to enhance the quality of education and ensure that all schools adhere to the guidelines set by the Board of School Education. By fostering transparency and accountability, the department aims to create a more equitable and effective education system for all students in Jammu and Kashmir.
