Authorities Close Jama Masjid, Prevent Mirwaiz from Leading Shab-e-Baraat Prayers

Srinagar, February 13, 2025 – In a controversial move, authorities in Srinagar closed the historic Jama Masjid and placed Kashmir’s top religious cleric, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, under house arrest ahead of the Shab-e-Baraat prayers. This decision has sparked outrage and raised concerns about religious freedom in the region.

The Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid, which manages the mosque, reported that the gates were abruptly closed following the afternoon prayers, and worshippers were asked to vacate the premises. The authorities informed the mosque’s caretakers that the observance of Shab-e-Baraat would not be permitted.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who traditionally leads the night prayers at the mosque, was placed under house arrest at his residence in Nigeen. This is the sixth consecutive year that the authorities have imposed such restrictions, preventing the observance of Shab-e-Baraat at the Jama Masjid.

The decision has drawn sharp criticism from various quarters. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the move, stating that it betrays a lack of confidence in the people and the law and order machinery. He emphasized that such extreme measures are unnecessary and that the people of Srinagar deserved better.

The Anjuman Auqaf expressed deep disappointment over the decision, stating that it not only hurts the sentiments of the people but also infringes upon their fundamental religious rights. The organization called for an end to such curbs on religious practices.

Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti also criticized the move, describing it as disrespectful and unwarranted. She expressed hope for answers from the authorities regarding the decision.

The closure of the Jama Masjid and the house arrest of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq have left many worshippers disappointed and concerned about the ongoing restrictions on religious practices in the region.

As the community continues to voice its discontent, the future of religious freedom in Kashmir remains uncertain.
