Intermittent Rainfall and Snowfall Disrupt Life in Kashmir; Schools Closed in Gurez
The Kashmir valley continues to experience intense wet weather conditions, with heavy rainfall and snowfall disrupting daily life. On the fourth consecutive day of intermittent precipitation, authorities have taken precautionary measures, including the closure of schools in the remote Gurez valley of Bandipora district for three days due to heavy snowfall and avalanche threats.
Rainfall and Snowfall Intensify Across the Valley
The summer capital Srinagar recorded 10.6 mm of rainfall, while Kupwara and Pahalgam received 9.1 mm and 5.8 mm, respectively. Heavy rainfall persisted through the night and morning hours, particularly in north Kashmir, where it continued until the afternoon. The higher reaches of the valley experienced moderate to heavy snowfall, further exacerbating the situation.
In Pahalgam, the rains caused the caving in of a bund (retention wall), resulting in mild injuries to three individuals. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported.
Schools Closed in Gurez
The Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Gurez, Mukhtar Ahmad Ahangar, issued an order to close all schools in the subdivision until March 15, 2025, citing safety concerns. The region has been severely affected by heavy snowfall, making the movement of students and staff unsafe. The decision aims to protect the well-being of all concerned.
Weather Forecast and Warnings
The Meteorological Department (MeT) has predicted that the wet weather will persist for another two to three days, with intermittent rain and snowfall expected until March 16. Moderate snowfall is likely in the higher reaches, while light rain and snow may occur in some areas during the morning of March 16. The weather is expected to improve by the afternoon.
The MeT has also issued warnings about potential landslides, mudslides, and avalanches in vulnerable areas. Residents have been advised to avoid sloppy and avalanche-prone regions during this period.
Precautionary Measures
Authorities are urging residents to exercise caution and prioritize safety during these adverse weather conditions. The closure of schools in Gurez reflects the administration’s proactive approach to mitigating risks associated with heavy snowfall and avalanches.
