Strong Winds Wreak Havoc in Kashmir: Property and Power Lines Damaged
Srinagar, March 28, 2025 – Strong winds swept across various parts of the Kashmir Valley on Thursday, causing significant damage to properties and infrastructure. The gusty winds, which persisted for hours, left a trail of destruction, including damaged vehicles, uprooted trees, and disrupted power supply in several areas.
Extent of Damage
Local sources reported that a Baleno car (registration JK01AW1099) was completely destroyed near the Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) in Srinagar when a large tree fell on it. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident. Additionally, several electric cables were damaged, leading to widespread power outages in affected areas.
Reports also emerged from other parts of the valley, including North Kashmir and Ganderbal district, where strong winds uprooted Chinar trees, causing further damage to property. Similar incidents were reported in Hajin, Bandipora, and other regions.
Restoration Efforts Underway
Local authorities, including teams from the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), have been deployed to assess the extent of the damage and coordinate restoration efforts. Cleanup operations are in full swing, with workers clearing fallen trees and debris to ensure public safety and restore normalcy.
An official from the SMC urged residents to avoid parking vehicles under trees or in open areas prone to wind damage. “Our teams are working tirelessly to address the damage caused by the storm and prevent further hazards,” the official stated.
Power Disruptions and Public Safety
The strong winds caused significant damage to electric cables, resulting in power outages in various parts of the valley. Authorities are working to restore electricity and have advised residents to report any hazards, such as fallen power lines, to the relevant departments.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has been monitoring the weather conditions and has advised residents to remain cautious as the winds subside. The IMD also noted fluctuations in temperature across the region, with a drop in day temperatures in the Kashmir Division.
Community Response
While no injuries have been reported, the incidents have raised concerns about preparedness for such weather events. Residents have called for improved infrastructure and better management of public spaces to minimize damage during extreme weather conditions.
