Ruckus in J&K Assembly Over Civilian Killings and Gulmarg Fashion Show Controversy

Kashmir’s chief priest, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, was among the first to condemn the event, calling it “outrageous” and an affront to the region’s cultural and religious values. “Obscenity in the name of tourism promotion will not be tolerated,” Mirwaiz stated in a post on X.
Opposition MLAs echoed these sentiments in the Assembly, demanding a thorough investigation into how the event was permitted. PDP MLA Mir Mohammad Fayaz described the show as a “cultural invasion,” while NC MLA Tanvir Sadiq questioned the government’s role in facilitating the event.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who also holds the Tourism portfolio, addressed the Assembly, acknowledging the public outrage and confirming that an inquiry had been ordered into both incidents. “The anger and frustration expressed by the people are entirely justified. I have asked for a detailed report on the Gulmarg fashion show within 24 hours, and appropriate action will follow,” Abdullah stated.
Regarding the Kathua killings, the Chief Minister assured the House that the Lieutenant Governor had already initiated a high-level investigation. “We are committed to ensuring justice for the victims and their families. This is a matter of grave concern, and we will leave no stone unturned in bringing the perpetrators to justice,” he added.

Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather repeatedly urged members to maintain decorum, citing procedural rules that prohibit discussions on matters under investigation. Independent MLA Sheikh Khursheed was marshaled out of the House after creating a ruckus, while Bani MLA Dr. Rameshwar Singh attempted to storm into the Well of the House, only to be restrained by marshals. In Srinagar, social activists and religious leaders held demonstrations against the Gulmarg fashion show, accusing the government of undermining Kashmir’s cultural and religious ethos.
