Strong Winds Disrupt Flight Operations at Srinagar Airport, 22 Flights Cancelled
Srinagar, March 28, 2025 – Strong winds wreaked havoc at Srinagar International Airport on Friday, leading to the cancellation of 22 flights and widespread delays. The adverse weather conditions, with wind speeds reaching up to 27 knots, severely impacted flight operations, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded.
Flight Cancellations and Delays
Airport officials confirmed that 22 flights were cancelled, while several others faced significant delays. The strong winds, caused by a steep pressure gradient, made it unsafe for aircraft to operate. The disruptions began early in the morning and persisted throughout the day, with only a limited number of arrivals and departures being accommodated.
Passengers faced considerable inconvenience, with many stranded at the airport awaiting updates. Authorities have advised travelers to stay in touch with their respective airlines for real-time information on flight schedules.
Damage Across Srinagar
The strong winds also caused significant damage across Srinagar city. Several trees were uprooted, damaging vehicles and properties in various areas. A car was crushed under a fallen tree, suffering severe damage. The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) swiftly launched cleanup operations to remove debris and ensure public safety.
SMC officials urged residents to avoid parking vehicles under trees or in open areas prone to wind damage. “Our teams are working tirelessly to address the damage caused by the storm and prevent further hazards,” an SMC spokesperson stated.
Weather Advisory
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported significant temperature fluctuations across Jammu and Kashmir over the past 24 hours. While day temperatures rose in the Jammu Division, the Kashmir Division experienced a drop in temperatures. The IMD has advised residents to remain cautious and avoid outdoor activities during strong winds.
