Mirwaiz Condemns Restrictions on Eid Prayers at Srinagar’s Historic Sites

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Questions Restrictions on Eid Prayers Amid ‘Normalcy’ Claims

Srinagar, March 31, 2025 – Hurriyat leader and chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has strongly condemned the authorities for barring Eid prayers at Srinagar’s historic Eidgah and Jama Masjid, questioning the rationale behind such restrictions during a time when claims of normalcy are being made. He highlighted that even during the peak of militancy in the 1990s, Eid prayers were allowed at these sacred spaces.

Criticism of Restrictions

Mirwaiz expressed deep anguish over the decision, calling it an “oppressive and authoritarian approach” that denies Kashmiri Muslims their basic religious rights. “Eidgah and Jama Masjid belong to the people, and barring them from these sacred spaces even on Eid reflects the oppressive and authoritarian approach that prevails in Kashmir today,” he stated.

He further questioned the agenda behind such restrictions, asking, “Is the collective identity of Kashmiri Muslims a threat to the rulers?” The cleric emphasized that the decision undermines the religious and cultural significance of these historic sites.

Historical Context

The closure of Eidgah and Jama Masjid for Eid prayers marks a stark departure from past practices. Mirwaiz pointed out that even during the height of militancy, congregational prayers were held at these locations, underscoring the importance of these spaces as symbols of unity and faith.

Community and Political Reactions

The decision has sparked widespread resentment among the local population and political leaders. The Anjuman Auqaf, the managing body of the Jama Masjid, had earlier urged authorities to facilitate Eid prayers, emphasizing the need to respect religious sentiments. However, the restrictions have led to criticism from various quarters, including opposition parties.
