MMU Expresses Concern Over Waqf Amendment Bill, Calls It Interference in Religious Affairs
Srinagar, April 3, 2025 – The Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU), the largest representative forum of Ulema, Imams, and religious organizations in Jammu and Kashmir, has expressed deep anguish over the passing of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in Parliament. The MMU, led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, has termed the bill a direct interference in the religious affairs of Muslims and an attempt to curtail the autonomy of Waqf institutions.
MMU’s Statement
The MMU emphasized that Waqf has historically played a vital role in serving the socio-religious needs of the Muslim community and is essential for its sustenance. In a strongly worded statement, the MMU said, “The ostensible intent of improving the functioning of Waqf institutions does not cut ice, as Muslims are aware of the larger political agenda behind this bill.” The organization accused the government of deliberately undermining religious and community institutions and encroaching upon them over time.
Meeting Scheduled for April 7
To deliberate on the implications of the bill, the MMU has convened a meeting of its members on Monday, April 7, 2025. The leadership is also in touch with the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) and other prominent Muslim organizations across India to formulate a collective and unified response to the development.
