Political Drama Unfolds in J&K Assembly Amid Waqf Act Controversy
Srinagar 08 April 2025: A House Divided
The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly witnessed high drama as chaos erupted over the demand to discuss the contentious Waqf (Amendment) Act. Amid the uproar, Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference (PC) President Sajad Lone launched a scathing attack on the National Conference (NC)-led government, accusing it of indulging in theatrics. Lone’s remarks have added fuel to the already heated political discourse surrounding the Act.
The Waqf Act Controversy
The Waqf (Amendment) Act, passed by Parliament, has been a lightning rod for criticism in Jammu and Kashmir. The legislation, which alters the management of Waqf properties, has been described by critics as an infringement on minority rights and religious autonomy. Opposition parties, including the PDP and PC, have been vocal in their demand for the Act’s repeal.
The controversy reached a boiling point in the Assembly when PDP MLA Waheed Para submitted a fresh resolution urging the Central Government to repeal the Act. However, the Speaker, Abdul Rahim Rather, citing Rule 58, disallowed any discussion on the matter, stating that it was sub judice. This decision led to heated exchanges, with Para being marshalled out of the House.
Sajad Lone’s Criticism
Sajad Lone did not hold back in his criticism of the NC, accusing the party of hypocrisy and political theatrics. Speaking to reporters outside the Assembly, Lone said, “The NC MLAs demanding a discussion reeks of theatre. It was their own Speaker, Abdul Rahim Rather, who denied the discussion under Rule 58. If the NC truly believes in the need for a debate, they should bring a no-confidence motion against their Speaker and appoint someone who will allow it.”
Lone also questioned the NC’s sincerity, pointing out that other resolutions, including those on statehood restoration, had also lapsed. “Why are we lapsing everything else? If everyone in NC feels that there should be a discussion, then bring a new Speaker. What is so big in it?” he added.
Assembly Chaos and Adjournments
The Assembly session descended into chaos as NC MLAs clashed with opposition members over the Speaker’s decision. PDP MLA Waheed Para, who had moved the resolution, was marshalled out after refusing to return to his seat. The Speaker subsequently adjourned the House for 30 minutes.
During the adjournment, Lone continued his criticism, accusing the NC of misleading the public. “This is nothing but a staged performance to divert attention from their own failures,” he remarked.
Political Fallout
The incident has further strained relations between the NC and opposition parties. PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti described the Speaker’s decision as “profoundly disappointing” and accused the NC of yielding to the BJP’s agenda. Meanwhile, Lone’s remarks have put the NC on the defensive, with party leaders struggling to justify their actions.
The controversy has also reignited debates about the role of regional assemblies in addressing laws passed by Parliament. Critics argue that the Assembly’s inability to discuss the Waqf Act reflects a broader erosion of democratic principles in Jammu and Kashmir.
Looking Ahead
As the Assembly session continues, the Waqf Act is expected to remain a flashpoint in Jammu and Kashmir’s political landscape. With opposition parties ramping up their criticism and the NC facing mounting pressure, the coming days will likely see more drama unfold in the House.
