NC, PDP Endorse Owaisi’s Call for Greater Engagement with Kashmiris

Srinagar, May 17, 2025 – The National Conference (NC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have endorsed AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi’s remarks, urging the Central Government to engage constructively with the people of Kashmir rather than leaving them to their fate.

Owaisi’s Statement: A Call for Inclusion

During an interview, Owaisi emphasized the need for the government to “adopt” Kashmiris, ensuring:

  • No human rights abuses in the region.
  • Protection of Kashmiri students from attacks in other parts of India.
  • Recognition of Kashmiris’ rights and concerns.

Owaisi stated that while India must confront Pakistan on terrorism, it should also build trust with Kashmiris, acknowledging their spontaneous protests against the Pahalgam terror attack as a sign of genuine solidarity.

NC & PDP’s Response: A Historic Opportunity

NC’s Stand

NC spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar welcomed Owaisi’s remarks, stating:

  • “This is the best time to reduce the trust deficit.”
  • “Kashmiris genuinely supported the government’s response to the Pahalgam attack.”
  • “The government should have reciprocated positively, but it failed to do so.”

Dar criticized the lack of outreach from Union Ministers, arguing that a visit to Kashmir’s affected areas would have sent a strong message of solidarity.

PDP’s Perspective

PDP spokesperson Mohit Bhan echoed Owaisi’s sentiments, stating:

  • “The Central Government must own the people of J&K.”
  • “Tourism has declined, and the government must step up to restore confidence.”
  • “A counter-campaign is needed against right-wing narratives discouraging travel to Kashmir.”

Bhan emphasized that J&K needs support and handholding, urging the government to acknowledge the challenges faced by Kashmiris.

Political & Social Implications

Trust Deficit & Public Sentiment

  • Kashmiris feel abandoned despite their support for India’s response to terrorism.
  • Hate crimes against Kashmiris post-Pahalgam attack have fueled resentment.
  • Political leaders demand proactive engagement to rebuild confidence and unity.

Government’s Next Steps

  • Address concerns of Kashmiri students & businesses.
  • Launch outreach programs to strengthen ties.
  • Ensure fair treatment of Kashmiris across India.
