Tawi and Basanter Rivers in Spate

The flood threat in Jammu region has intensified after another spell of relentless rain. Both the Tawi River in Udhampur and Jammu city, and the Basanter River in Samba, have crossed danger levels, raising fears of flooding in nearby low-lying villages.

  • Tawi River (Jammu): Touched 14 feet, forcing closure of the 4th Tawi Bridge.

  • Tawi River (Udhampur): Reached 18.31 feet, well above the flood alert mark of 15 feet (danger level at 20 feet).

  • Basanter River (Samba): Surged 4 feet beyond the alert level, threatening habitations on both banks.

Districts on High Alert

Flash flood warnings have been sounded across nine districts:

  • Kathua, Rajouri, Poonch, Reasi

  • Doda, Ramban, Kishtwar

  • Samba, Udhampur

Schools in Jammu Division remain closed, while inter-district roads in Poonch, Reasi, and Doda are blocked by landslides.

Ground Impact: Roads, Power, and Homes

  • The Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) remains blocked due to fresh landslides.

  • The Batote–Doda–Kishtwar Road is cut off.

  • Power outages have been reported across multiple blocks.

  • Bunds near Bikram Chowk show signs of erosion, threatening Gandhinagar, Satwari, and Chatha localities.

Army Steps In: Bailey Bridge Installed

To restore connectivity, the Army has deployed a 110-foot Bailey bridge over the Jangalwar stream, reconnecting Doda with Kishtwar, a critical lifeline cut off by landslides.

Emergency teams are also testing water sources to prevent post-flood disease outbreaks.

Weather Forecast: More Rain Ahead

The Meteorological Centre Srinagar warns of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next 16 hours, especially across:

  • Jammu, Kathua, Reasi, Rajouri, Udhampur, Ramban.

⚠️ Risks Remain High: Flash floods, landslides, and cloudbursts remain likely, keeping authorities on alert mode.

Bottom-Line: A Region on Edge

With rivers swelling, highways collapsing, and power lines down, Jammu is staring at one of its most volatile monsoons in decades. Each spell of rain is undoing recovery efforts, leaving communities in a cycle of evacuation, damage, and repair.

The Tawi and Basanter—lifelines turned threats—are reminders that unchecked urban sprawl and fragile slopes in Himalayan terrain make flood control a losing battle without urgent climate resilience planning.
