Jammu Division on High Alert: Heavy Rainfall & Disaster Risk
The Meteorological Centre in Srinagar has sounded a red alert for the Jammu region, forecasting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall on September 2.
-
Rainfall of this magnitude poses serious risks of cloudbursts, flash floods, landslides, and shooting stones—particularly along hilly terrain and national highways.
-
Several schools across Jammu districts have been ordered closed as a precautionary safety measure, ensuring children remain safe during the high-intensity weather.
-
Commuters have been warned to avoid unnecessary travel, as highways like Jammu–Srinagar and Jammu–Poonch are prone to blockages and sudden slides.
The Jammu administration, SDRF, and Army have been placed on alert to deal with possible emergencies.
Kashmir Valley: Cloudy Skies, Moderate Showers Ahead
While the Jammu region braces for heavy downpours, the Kashmir Valley will witness light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms from September 2 to 8.
-
Skies are expected to remain generally cloudy with intermittent showers.
-
The IMD has warned of brief intense spells that may trigger localized flooding in low-lying areas.
-
The Dal Lake, Jhelum, Wular, and other water bodies remain under advisory, with boating restrictions strictly enforced to prevent accidents.
This comes just days after the Jhelum River touched danger marks in Srinagar, reminding residents of the trauma of the 2014 floods.
Safety Advisory for Public
Authorities have urged people in both Jammu and Kashmir to stay vigilant during this critical monsoon phase. Key advisories include:
-
🚫 Stay away from riverbanks, nallahs, and unstable slopes.
-
🚶♂️ Avoid unnecessary travel; move only after clearance from Traffic Control Units.
-
🏘️ Residents in flood-prone localities should keep emergency kits ready and remain in touch with local administration.
-
⛑️ Emergency services including Army, NDRF, SDRF, and Flood Control Departments are conducting rescue drills to ensure quick response if situations escalate.
Monsoon Outlook: September Brings Above-Normal Rainfall
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has projected that September will record above-normal rainfall across North India.
-
The monsoon withdrawal has been delayed, meaning rainfall activity will continue longer than usual.
-
Experts attribute this to an unusual interaction between monsoon currents and western disturbances, which intensifies rain-bearing systems over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
-
This interaction also raises the risk of unseasonal snowfalls in high-altitude areas like Ladakh, as witnessed recently.
Climate Context: A Region on Edge
The latest weather warning underscores how fragile the Himalayan region has become.
-
Jammu’s hillsides are prone to landslides because of rapid construction and deforestation.
-
Kashmir’s rivers and lakes are vulnerable due to siltation, encroachments, and climate-driven changes in rainfall.
-
Together, these make extreme weather more destructive than in the past.
Climate experts warn that unless resilient infrastructure and sustainable land-use policies are adopted, every monsoon will bring repeat crises for Himalayan states.
