Lives Lost, Villages Cut Off
Relentless monsoon rain has claimed three lives in Jammu region, with officials confirming that a mother and daughter perished when their mud house collapsed in Kangri village, Rajouri. A third fatality was reported in another rain-related incident.
Entire hamlets were cut off as rivers surged beyond safe limits. In Akhnoor, the Chenab River rose four feet above the evacuation level, marooning villagers.
In Fatu Kotli, 45 people trapped by floodwaters were airlifted by BSF helicopters in a joint operation with J&K Police.

Weather Outlook: More Rain Ahead
The Meteorological Department has warned of heavy to very heavy rain over the next 12–16 hours in Jammu, Kathua, Reasi, Doda, Udhampur, Rajouri, and Ramban.
With rivers already above danger levels, fears of fresh floods and landslides loom large.
Editorial Note: Lessons Beyond Rescue
The tragedy once again exposes the fragile infrastructure and unchecked floodplain encroachments in Jammu & Kashmir. While rescue teams display courage in crisis, the bigger challenge lies in climate-resilient planning.
The question remains: will authorities continue to react to disasters, or finally prepare for them?
