Kashmir Schools to Reopen on March 1: DSEK Issues Comprehensive Guidelines

‘Festive Outlook, Clean Premises’: DSEK Issues Guidelines for Reopening of Schools

Srinagar, February 22, 2025 – As schools in Kashmir prepare to reopen on March 1, 2025, following the winter break, the Directorate of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) has issued a comprehensive set of guidelines to ensure a smooth and welcoming transition for students and staff. The guidelines emphasize creating a festive atmosphere, maintaining clean premises, and ensuring all necessary arrangements are in place.

Creating a Festive Atmosphere

The DSEK has directed all heads of educational institutions to celebrate the reopening of schools as a special occasion. Schools are encouraged to create a festive ambience to attract students and foster a conducive learning environment. “The reopening of schools should be celebrated in a festive atmosphere to create an inviting and conducive environment for students,” the Director of School Education Kashmir stated.

Early Preparation and Institutional Plans

Heads of institutions are required to make necessary preparations well in advance of the reopening. This includes finalizing the institutional plan, preparing the school timetable, and ensuring sanitation facilities are ready. Proper planning will help avoid last-minute delays and disruptions. “The heads shall ensure mobilisation, including the preparation of the Institutional Plan and timetable, as well as sanitation, well in advance,” the circular reads.

Addressing Maintenance and Repairs

Before reopening, schools must ensure all essential repairs are completed. This includes checking the functionality of drinking water facilities, electricity supply, toilets, and window panes. Ensuring the physical infrastructure is in good condition is vital for the safety and comfort of students and staff. “The heads of institutions will be responsible for ensuring that all necessary arrangements, such as minor repairs and retrofitting (if required) for drinking water, electricity, toilets, window panes, etc., are completed before the schools reopen,” the Director added.

Verifying Biometric and Attendance Systems

The DSEK guidelines highlight the importance of ensuring that the Biometric Attendance System and JK Attendance Portal are up-to-date and functional. School authorities must verify these systems to ensure accurate attendance records from day one. “The heads shall ensure that the biometric JK Attendance Portal is functional and updated as per the current staff in position,” DSEK said.

Maintaining Cleanliness and Creating a Welcoming Environment

A clean and organized school environment is key to a positive reopening. Schools should ensure that their premises are neat, sanitized, and ready for the arrival of students. Additionally, a festive décor can enhance the atmosphere, making students feel excited and ready to learn. “The school premises must be kept neat, clean, and decorated in a festive manner,” the Director emphasized.

Sensitization Sessions for Cluster Heads

Complex/Cluster Heads are instructed to conduct sensitization sessions with schools in their clusters. These sessions will prepare all staff and stakeholders for the upcoming reopening, ensuring alignment with the DSEK guidelines. “The complex and cluster heads shall hold sensitisation sessions with their respective cluster schools to ensure preparedness for the reopening in light of these instructions,” DSEK added.
