Jamia Masjid Closed on Laylatul Qadr: No Prayers Allowed
Srinagar 28 March 2025 : In a decision that has sparked widespread condemnation, authorities in Srinagar have announced that the historic Jamia Masjid will remain closed on the sacred night of Laylatul Qadr, preventing devotees from offering prayers. Laylatul Qadr, also known as the Night of Power, is one of the holiest nights in the Islamic calendar, observed during the last ten days of Ramadan.
Authorities Convey Decision to Mosque Management
The Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid, the managing committee of the mosque, confirmed that the administration had conveyed the decision to close the mosque for the night. This move has been met with strong criticism from religious leaders, political figures, and the local community, who view it as an insensitive act that deprives thousands of Muslims of spiritual solace.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the chief cleric of the mosque, expressed his anguish over the decision, stating, “It is extremely regrettable and condemnable that the insensitivity of those in power will deprive tens of thousands of Muslims, who for generations have visited Jamia Masjid on this night, of spiritual solace and worship, causing them and me great grief and dismay.”
Community and Political Reactions
The decision has drawn sharp reactions from various quarters. Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti criticized the move, calling it an example of collective punishment imposed on Kashmiris. She stated, “The government which claims and celebrates that it has eradicated separatism persists in viewing every Kashmiri as a potential separatist. Their false narrative of having restored total normalcy is exposed when a historic mosque is closed off to worshippers on a night so deeply cherished by all.”
The Kashmiri Pandit Sangharsh Samiti (KPSS) also questioned the decision, stating that true normalcy in the region would mean allowing religious activities at the Jamia Masjid. The organization emphasized that the closure undermines claims of peace and stability in Jammu and Kashmir.
Laylatul Qadr: A Night of Spiritual Significance
Laylatul Qadr holds immense importance for Muslims worldwide, as it is believed to be the night when the Quran was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad. Devotees spend the night in prayers, seeking forgiveness and blessings from Allah. Traditionally, the Jamia Masjid has been a focal point for congregational prayers and spiritual gatherings on this night.
Implications for the Region
The closure of the Jamia Masjid on Laylatul Qadr has raised concerns about the broader implications for religious freedom and community harmony in the region. Critics argue that such actions could deepen mistrust and alienation among the local population.
As the night approaches, the decision remains a contentious issue, with calls for reconsideration and appeals for sensitivity toward the religious sentiments of the community.
