Peoples Conference Leader Criticizes National Conference’s Handling of Legislative Debate
Srinagar, 09 April 2025: A Heated Exchange in the Assembly
Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Conference President Sajad Lone has accused the National Conference (NC)-led government of sabotaging discussions on the controversial Waqf (Amendment) Act in the Legislative Assembly. Lone’s remarks come amid ongoing chaos in the Assembly, where opposition parties have clashed with NC legislators over the Speaker’s refusal to allow a debate on the Act.
Sajad Lone’s Criticism
Speaking to reporters outside the Assembly, Lone described the NC’s actions as “theatrics” and questioned the party’s sincerity in opposing the Waqf Act. “If NC’s song and dance performance in the Assembly is not theatre, why is NC not bringing a no-confidence motion against its own Speaker for disallowing their adjournment motion?” Lone remarked.
He further accused the NC of failing to represent the sentiments of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, stating, “The NC has sabotaged any sort of comment or censure that could have come or rejection from the people of J&K. Their actions reek of hypocrisy.”
Assembly Chaos
The Legislative Assembly has been marred by protests over the past week, with opposition parties demanding a discussion on the Waqf Act. PDP MLA Waheed Para was marshalled out of the House after attempting to move a resolution urging the Central Government to repeal the Act. NC MLAs also staged protests, tearing copies of the Waqf Act and chanting slogans against the BJP-led central government.
The Speaker, Abdul Rahim Rather, cited Rule 58 to disallow the debate, stating that the matter is sub judice. This decision has drawn criticism from opposition leaders, who argue that the Assembly should have the right to discuss laws that directly impact the region.
Political Fallout
Lone’s remarks have added to the growing tensions between the NC and opposition parties. PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti described the Speaker’s decision as “profoundly disappointing” and accused the NC of yielding to the BJP’s agenda. Meanwhile, Lone has called for a no-confidence motion against the Speaker, urging opposition parties to unite in challenging the NC’s handling of the issue.
Public Reaction
The controversy has sparked widespread debate among the public, with many questioning the Assembly’s ability to address critical issues. Social media platforms have been flooded with discussions, with hashtags like #WaqfActDebate and #AssemblyChaos trending among users.
Looking Ahead
As the Assembly session continues, the Waqf Act is expected to remain a flashpoint in Jammu and Kashmir’s political landscape. With opposition parties ramping up their criticism and the NC facing mounting pressure, the coming days will likely see more drama unfold in the House.
