Missed Opportunity: Lone Criticizes NC’s Handling of Waqf Bill in J&K Assembly

Missed Opportunity for Representation Sparks Political Backlash

Srinagar, 14 April 2025: A Heated Exchange Over Assembly Proceedings

People’s Conference (PC) President Sajad Lone has expressed sharp criticism of National Conference (NC) Chief Dr. Farooq Abdullah for supporting the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Speaker’s decision to disallow a debate on the contentious Waqf (Amendment) Act. Lone described Abdullah’s stance as a “mockery” and accused the NC of sabotaging a historic opportunity to represent the sentiments of Jammu and Kashmir’s Muslim-majority population.

Lone’s Criticism

Speaking to the media, Lone questioned the NC’s actions during the Assembly session, pointing out that the Speaker, who made the decision, belongs to the NC. “They have 50 MLAs, and the Speaker is from their own party. Then who were they protesting against in the House?” he remarked.

Lone emphasized that the Assembly could have sent a powerful message by passing a resolution or holding a meaningful discussion on the Waqf Bill. Instead, he accused the NC of staging a “three-day drama” to appease New Delhi and BJP MLAs.

Farooq Abdullah’s Defense

Dr. Farooq Abdullah defended the Speaker’s decision, stating that the matter is currently under consideration in the Supreme Court. He argued that discussing the Waqf Bill in the Assembly would not have changed its outcome and that the issue should be addressed after the court’s ruling.

Missed Opportunity for Representation

Lone lamented that the Assembly failed to stand up for the people it represents. “As the only Muslim-majority province in the country, our collective voice would have carried significant weight. Now, even if thousands approach the court, the matter will be decided purely on legal grounds, not reflecting the sentiments of the people,” he said.

Looking Ahead

The controversy has reignited debates about the role of the Assembly in addressing sensitive issues and the political dynamics within Jammu and Kashmir. As the Waqf (Amendment) Act continues to stir emotions, the focus remains on how leaders will navigate the challenges of representation and governance.
