Kashmir’s Heatwave Crisis: Schools in the Firing Line
Srinagar, 25 July: The Kashmir Valley is currently in the grip of an unprecedented heatwave, with temperatures soaring to record-breaking levels. This extreme weather condition has led to widespread discomfort and health concerns among residents, particularly children. In response to the escalating situation, the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has urged the administration to consider closing schools until the heatwave subsides.
A Scorching Reality
Kashmir, traditionally known for its temperate climate, has been experiencing a dramatic shift in weather patterns. The mercury has been consistently climbing, surpassing historical averages by a significant margin. This abnormal heatwave has not only caused discomfort but has also posed serious health risks to the population.

The chamber has emphasized the importance of prioritizing the health and safety of children over academic pursuits during such extreme weather conditions.
In a statement, the KCCI urged the administration to take immediate action to protect the well-being of students. The chamber has highlighted the adverse impact of the heatwave on children’s ability to concentrate and learn effectively. It has also stressed the importance of creating a conducive environment for both students and teachers.
Administration Under Pressure
The administration is currently deliberating on the KCCI’s appeal. While the government is aware of the challenges posed by the heatwave, it is also mindful of the academic calendar and the potential disruptions caused by school closures. The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry ( KCCI) has appealed the Administration to close down schools in the valley in view of the unprecedented and unbearable heat wave prevailing in Kashmir Division. The valley has consistently been recording historically high temperature causing tremendous problems for school going children. The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry has taken up the matter with the administration and appealed to them to consider the concerns of the parents of large number of children for closure of schools till the cycle of present heat wave and adverse weather conditions show signs of improvement. The parents have been complaining that the health of their children is being affected, more so, in view of power outages in schools , resulting in non – operation of Coolers and fans. The chamber in its interaction with high officials of the administration have been assured that the matter of closure is under consideration and a decision in the matter will be taken soon.
