Snowy Welcome Marks Winter’s Arrival in Kashmir

Sonmarg, Gulmarg, Higher Reaches Don a White Blanket, Plains Get Rainy Prelude

By: Javid Amin
Srinagar, Nov 16
– As temperatures show a steep decline, the enchanting valley of Kashmir is greeted with the first snowfall of the season, marking the arrival of winter. The picturesque landscapes of Gulmarg and other higher reaches of Kashmir recorded fresh snowfall, while the plains witnessed rains on Saturday, creating a mesmerizing winter spectacle.

A Winter Wonderland in Kashmir

The iconic Gulmarg ski resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district received the season’s first snowfall early Saturday morning. The lush meadows were covered with a pristine white blanket of about an inch of snow, transforming the area into a winter wonderland. The intermittent snowfall has only added to the charm of this popular tourist destination, likely attracting more visitors in the coming days.

Several other high-altitude areas in Kashmir, including the strategically significant Gurez Valley in Bandipora district and Machil in Kupwara district, experienced their first snowfall of the season. Key routes like the Mughal Road in Shopian and elevated areas such as Sadna Top and Razdan Pass also witnessed fresh snowfall, enhancing the scenic beauty but disrupting surface transportation at critical passes.

Snowfall in Sonmarg and Zojila

Zojila Pass and Sonamarg, known for their breathtaking beauty, also experienced fresh snowfall. Sonamarg received over 3 inches of snow, while Zojila Pass and Minamarg Drass were blanketed with 4 to 5 inches of snow until Saturday evening. The snowfall has brought a serene and magical atmosphere to these regions, delighting tourists and locals alike.

The Srinagar-Leh National Highway, a vital road link connecting Kashmir with Ladakh, was temporarily closed for traffic on Saturday evening due to heavy snowfall. Traffic Police officials stated that any decision to allow traffic on the road will be taken subject to improvement in weather conditions. Tourists visiting zero point Zojila and Sonamarg were seen enjoying the snowfall, capturing memorable moments against the backdrop of snow-covered landscapes.

Rain and Temperature Drop in the Plains

While the higher reaches enjoyed the snowfall, the plains across Kashmir, including Srinagar, witnessed rainfall. The rain, coupled with the season’s first snowfall in the higher reaches, led to a steep drop in temperatures, marking the onset of winter conditions. Srinagar recorded a temperature of 12.2 degrees Celsius, Qazigund 12.4 degrees Celsius, Pahalgam 8 degrees Celsius, Kupwara 7.3 degrees Celsius, Kokernag 11.6 degrees Celsius, and Gulmarg 1.2 degrees Celsius.

Weather Forecast and Precautions

The Meteorological Department (MeT) has predicted an improvement in weather conditions from Sunday, with dry weather expected from November 17 to 23. MeT officials have advised tourists, trekkers, and travellers to plan their journeys accordingly and exercise caution while travelling at higher altitudes due to slippery road conditions and potential weather-related disruptions.

Authorities have also urged travellers to stay informed about weather forecasts and road conditions to ensure safe travel. The fresh snowfall has caused temporary disruptions to surface transportation along key routes, but the beauty of the snow-covered landscapes offers a unique and unforgettable experience for visitors.
