Gulmarg receives fresh snowfall
Dense fog disrupts air, surface traffic in Jammu
Ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir has received fresh snowfall even as might temperature in the Valley saw a slight improvement. The weatherman has predicted rains and snow in next 24 hours.
The Meteorological Department officials said Gulmarg recorded 1.25 inch snowfall. “The snowfall took place last night. In next 24 hours, we expect light rains in plains and moderate snowfall in higher reaches of Kashmir,” a Met official said, adding “the minimum temperature in Gulmarg settled at minus 5.8 degrees, against the previous night’s minus 5.6 degrees Celsius.”
MeT officials said Srinagar and other towns of Kashmir witnessed slight improvement in night temperature. “The improvement in temperature was because of the cloudy sky,” they said, adding that the minimum temperature recorded in Srinagar during the night was minus 0.3 degrees.
Officials said the minimum temperature recorded in Pahalgam was minus 3 degrees while as Qazigund recorded a low of minus 3.4 degrees compared to minus 3.8 degrees Celsius the previous night. The night temperatures in Kupwara, in north Kashmir, increased by almost three degrees to settle at a low of minus 1.5 degrees Celsius, while Kokernag, in south Kashmir, recorded a minimum of minus 3.3 degrees Celsius, they said.
MeT officials said Leh town of Ladakh recorded minus 10 degree Celsius while Kargil town recorded minus 14 as the minimum temperature. In Jammu city, the minimum temperature was 7 degrees, they added.
Meanwhile, dense fog engulfed Jammu plains Monday affecting air, rail and road traffic. The Metrological department predicted foggy conditions to continue in next two days.
As per senior officials in the Airport Authority of India, “flight operations at Jammu airport were affected from morning to 2.00 pm due to dense fog and low visibility.”
“Kashmir and Leh-bound flights of Spice Jet, IndiGo and Air India, GoAir and others departed 2 to 3 hour beyond their scheduled time, while all arriving flights were also delayed,” they said.
Similarly, dense fog disrupted rail services as the Northern Railways rescheduled two main trains, while several trains were running late by two hours to 24 hours, an official spokesperson said.
