Kashmiri students allege discrimination at BGSBU

The Kashmiri students pursuing different courses in Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU) Rajouri Friday accused the administration of adopting discrimination towards them.
The Kashmiri students said they are often being harassed by the local students in the varsity on basis of region while the people at helm of affairs turn a blind eye towards the issue.
“The Administration always supports them while overlooks our situation. We are harassed mentally as well as physically,” the students said.
They alleged that students from Poonch and Rajouri beat them up in broad day light while the administration has given them ‘a free hand to do so.’
“Recently they thrashed junior students of B-Tech who later submitted a complaint to the warden of their hostel, but that was put into trash,” the students said.
The students said after a scuffle between Kashmiri and local students in dining hall of the hostel, locals got and FIR registered against five Kashmiris.
They said one Junaid Ahmad was whisked away by Police from university campus and put behind bars in Police Station Rajouri.
“During the scuffle a student received head injury which could have been because of his slipping on the floor, but the local students and some officials said Kashmiri students attacked the students with knife which is far from truth,” the agitated students said.
“We were thrashed by the local students in Rajouri town after we went to meet a lawyer to get the student released from police custody,” the students said
The police officials in Rajouri said they arrested few students after receiving a complaint of scuffle among them. “They were booked under section 146, 333 and 4/25,” a police official said.
Meanwhile, President Teachers Association BGSBU, Prof Aijaz Ahmad said there was no regional bias in the campus, however, the students were trying to gain sympathy out of this issue.
“We are in touch with police to get the student released. We are working for the benefit of every student,” he said, adding that the allegations for giving patronage to a particular group of students were baseless. “All students are equal for us.”
He said the varsity authorities have constituted a committee in this regard which is supposed to submit its report within three days. “I am also the committee member and we are looking into the issue and are hopeful of positive results,” he said.
