Hurriyat (G) calls for peaceful protests after Friday prayersExpressing concern and anguish over the condition of Kashmiri detainees in Tihar Jail, Chairman Hurriyat (G) Syed Ali Geelani Thursday appealed the human rights organizations including Amnesty International to take serious notice of the ‘ill-treatment’ meted out with the Kashmiri detainees in the jail.
He said the ‘woeful tale of the miseries’ of Kashmiri prisoners in Tihar Jail from the mouth of a detainee Mahmood Ayoub Dar alias Topiwala who is presently on one month parole should be taken as a wakeup call for the conscience of the human rights organizations.
According to Dar, Kashmiri prisoners in Tihar are being ‘harassed even for the glass of water.’
The daily wages of a skilled prisoner have been declared as Rs128 but the detainees in Tihar Jail are being denied this right and from last two months, they have not been paid for their works and the jail authorities are subjecting the Muslim detainees especially Kashmiri prisoners to forced labor and have created an extreme corrupt system in the jail, he said.
“Although this kind of treatment with the Muslim prisoners inside the jail is a normal process in every jail of India but the attitude of the jail authorities towards Kashmiri detainees is very biased and revengeful,” Geelani alleged.
Terming the condition of all Muslim prisoners in Jammu & Kashmir jails as well as outside the state as very concerning, Geelani demanded immediate halt to this practice and appealed the UNO and Amnesty International to use their influence and come to the rescue of the Kashmiri and Muslim prisoners in Indian jails.
Reiterating his appeal for peaceful protest demonstration after the Friday prayers on November 27 against the ‘unnecessary harassment of youth, continuous detention of separatist leaders and youth and ill-treatment with Kashmiri detainees in Tihar Jail,’ Hurriyat (G) chairman said the protest should be peaceful, disciplined and dignified in every respect.
