ABVP activists block road, clash with police over JNU incident

Protesters demand action against ‘anti-national’ elements

Activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) today took out a protest rally on the Jammu University campus and blocked the Bikram Chowk-university road against the controversial Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) episode in which some students allegedly raised “anti-national” slogans during an event.
The event was held at JNU last week to mark the third death anniversary of terrorist Afzal Guru, who was executed three years ago.
The protesters had a minor scuffle with the police after they burnt tyres in the middle of the road to register their resentment against the raising of “anti-India” slogans at JNU.
Led by Jammu University president of the ABVP Lokinder Singh, the protesters raised slogans against the Congress, its vice-president Rahul Gandhi and “anti-national elements” on the JNU campus and said the countrymen would not tolerate such alleged “anti-national act” in any part of the country.
“We strongly condemn the act of anti-nationals in JNU and demand for harsh punishment to all those who were involved in anti-national activities on the JNU campus. It is highly unfortunate and a matter of serious concern that those people who are getting subsidised education and basic facility of life are involved in anti-national activities,” Lokinder Singh said while addressing the protesters.
Kannav Sharma, Jammu University secretary of the ABVP, said the JNU, in particular, and government, in general, should set an example by punishing all persons involved in raising “anti-national slogans” in such a manner so that no one dared to carry such acts in future in any part of country.
Earlier, students from various departments of Jammu University assembled to support the protest called by the ABVP to give a “strong reply to all those persons who live , eat and reside and avail all benefits of India, but from time to time raises voice against India”.
