KU scholars start signature campaign for JNU stirResearch scholars of the Kashmir University (KU) today started a signature campaign to extend support to the students and faculty of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi.
Scholars assembled near Alama Iqbal Library of the KU with banners in support of JNU students.
“We have organised this peaceful and non-violent signature campaign in solidarity with the JNU students who are being targeted by RSS-backed agencies. We stand for strengthening the voice of dissent in universities with due recognition to freedom of speech and expression,” Ashfaq Ali, the coordinator of the programme, said.
The scholars opened the campaign with an 11-point memorandum to question the politics “against the minorities in India and the emerging anti-secular voice by the RSS”. They condemned the attacks on students, teachers and journalists at Patiala House Court, New Delhi, and said “Such incidents are aimed at terrorising the common people of India.”
Raising anti-RSS and anti-BJP slogans, they demanded release of former professor of Delhi University SAR Geelani and student leader Kanhaiya Kumar. “They became the victims of political vendetta. There should be a rational critique within the universities and we stand for it,” the students stated.
