The Meteorological department (MeT) Saturday predicted more rains or snow in next 24 hours in the state. Meanwhile the Srinagar-Jammu highway remained closed for vehicular traffic.
A MeT official said there is possibility of moderate to heavy rains or snow at most of the places across the state.
He said there is possibility of heavy rainfall or snowfall at isolated places as well. “The weather would likely improve from February 6”.
Meanwhile, Srinagar-Jammu Highway remained closed for traffic for the second consecutive day today in the wake of landslides at some places.
A traffic police official said highway was closed for traffic today due to muck brought in by landslides accumulated on road at some places.
He said landslides have occurred near Ramban and Battery Cheshma which have forced the closure of the highway.
Many vehicles are stranded along the highway.
Inspector General (IG) Traffic Police, Sahfqat Watali said in case of fair weather, only Light Passenger vehicles would be allowed on either sides the highway.
He said the vehicles coming from Srinagar have to cross Tunnel by 2 pm while the vehicles coming from Jammu have to cross Nagrota by 11 am and Udhampur by 1 pm.
He appealed people to contact the traffic department to check the conditions of the highway before leaving towards their destinations from the either side.
According to MeT official, Srinagar recorded a low of 1 degree Celsius.
“Leh town registered a low of minus 4.6 degrees Celsius, making it the coldest recorded place in the state,” he said.
He said the famous hill resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir registered minimum temperature of minus 1.4 degrees Celsius.
The official said the famous ski resort of Gulmarg was the coldest recorded place in the Valley with the minimum of minus 4.4 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, divisional administration Kashmir today issued a fresh medium danger avalanche warning for next 24-hours for hilly and avalanche prone areas of Kashmir Valley and Kargil district.
“Medium danger avalanche warning valid for next 24-hours upto February 05 (5 pm) exists for avalanche prone slopes in Kupwara, Bandipora, Baramulla, Ganderbal, Kulgam, Budgam, Anantnag and Kargil districts of Kashmir Division” a statement of the divisional administration said.
It said Deputy Commissioners of Kashmir Division including Kargil have been asked to take precautionary measures in their respective districts and advise people not to venture in avalanche prone areas during the aforementioned period and to keep clearing snow depositions from roof tops of their houses and bunkers to avoid damages.
The Deputy Commissioner Kupwara also issued avalanche warning for next 24 hours for higher reaches and avalanche-prone areas of Kupwara district.
He said medium danger avalanche warning exists for Keran, Karnah, Machil Tanghdar, Budnamal, Jumgund Nowgam, Kumkadi, higher reaches of Kralpora area and other sloppy areas of the district upto February 4
He said people residing in these areas have been asked to take necessary precaution while moving outside their homes and refrain from venturing outside during the night hours for their own safety.
