IG Reviews security of Chenani-Nashri tunnel, Decks cleared for inauguration

Inspector General of Police, Jammu, S.D. Singh today reviewed the security arrangements for opening of Chenani-Nashri tunnel, scheduled in the third week of this month.
As per a police spokesperson, IG reviewed security ‘bundobust’ of tunnel and forthcoming VVIP in the town to inaugurate the mega project.
“Detailed discussions were held with the officers of police and civil administration including representatives of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to ensure enhanced security measures for the safety and security of tunnel,” the spokesperson said.
IG also discussed the security arrangement required to be made on opening of tunnel for hassle free traffic movement.
DIG Doda-Kishtwar-Ramban Range, DIG Udhampur-Reasi Range, DIG CRPF Ops, Jammu, Dy. Commissioner Udhampur-Ramban, SSP CID SB, SSP Security, SSP Ramban, SSP Udhampur, SP Traffic were also present during the visit of IGP Jammu Zone.
Later, IG reviewed security arrangement of Ramban district.
He directed the officers to review the crime and law and order of the District Ramban.
“IGP Jammu Zone directed the supervisory officer to lay more thrust on minimizing the pendency of UI cases and Inquest proceeding. It was also emphasized upon the participants to ensure optimum use of the resources available and make sincere efforts to achieve the desired results” the spokesperson added.

Meanwhile, decks have been cleared for the opening of the 9.4 km Chenani-Nashri tunnel on Srinagar-Jammu highway. The tunnel is likely to be inaugurated by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi this month. The union surface transport minister Nitin Gadkari had assured the chief minister that the tunnel would be thrown open this month.
The IGP Jammu SD Jamwal reviewed the security preparedness for the inauguration of the tunnel. “The review was done for the forthcoming visit of the VVIP for inauguration of the mega project. The IGP held detail discussions on safety and security of tunnel. The IGP also discussed the security arrangement required to be made on opening of tunnel,” a Police spokesman said in a statement.
The statement didn’t explicitly mention the Prime Minister, but sources in the National Highway Authority of India said the tunnel is most likely to be inaugurated by the PM, though the dates have not been finalized yet. The NHAI officials had last week held detailed deliberations about the opening of the tunnel. The NHAI officials are in constant touch with the Prime Minister’s Office.
It’s in place to mention here that opening of this tunnel would reduce the distance between Srinagar and Jammu by 40 kilometres.
