Heavy School Bags: Pvt schools to retain notebooks, additional books in classes

Following directions from government to reduce burden on students due to heavy school bags, private schools have decided to modify academic schedule for the lower primary and junior class students.
The school administration in Biscoe and Mallinson Higher Secondary school has worked out a plan wherein the students of lower primary classes will keep their notebooks in the school.

“We have worked out a plan and the lower primary students will keep their copies in school. There is no need to carry them daily. When the need arises we will send the copies home,” said Principal Tyndale Biscoe and Mallinson Higher Secondary School (HSS), Parvaiz Kaul.
He said the school management is trying to get number of copies reduced for students.
“We are telling them to get one copy having partitions. It will reduce the burden. We are trying to re-arrange the time table if it is possible. We are doing it to reduce the burden on students,” Kaul said.

He said the school will abide by the directions issued by the Directorate of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) to reduce the burden on of school children.
“We have looked at the order department wise and according to the age of child. There are some initiatives which we have already taken and some will be started from next session for higher classes,” Kaul said.
He said the changes will apply for students in four schools which include Tyndale Biscoe, Mallinson, Kashmir Valley School and Biscoe School Tangmarg.
“From next session we are planning to have loose sheets instead of copies,” he said.
The Directorate of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) last week issued a circular asking private schools to re-frame the time table in order to reduce the burden on the students.
While some private schools have already started implementing the government order, some schools feign ignorance about receiving any such order from government.
“I have not received any order but I read about it in newspaper. We have not done anything on it as our exams are going on. During exam days students don’t carry their bags,” said Principal Burn Hall School Srinagar, Sebastian N.
President Private Schools Association Kashmir, G N Var, said they have already constituted a committee to check books and syllabus for schools for next session.
“As of now we are trying to adjust time table,” Var said.
