As weather improves, highway opens to one-way traffic

The weather in the Valley remained mostly dry and the Jammu-Srinagar national highway was opened to one-way traffic today after remaining closed for three days.
On Wednesday, 24 flights were cancelled due to poor visibility and snowfall in the Kashmir region. Officials said with the improvement in weather, all flights from the Srinagar airport were on schedule today. The weather department has predicted mostly dry weather for the week with rain or snow in isolated places.
Officials of the weather department said that during the next 24 hours, there can be light rain and snow across the Valley.
“Srinagar is generally going to be cloudy tomorrow. The maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 6°C and minus 2°C, respectively,” the weatherman has said.
At minus 4.3°C on Wednesday, Srinagar city witnessed the lowest maximum temperature of the season. Gulmarg was the coldest in the state on Thursday at minus 9.8°C.
The maximum temperature in Srinagar on Wednesday was 4.2°C, while the minimum temperature was recorded at minus 1.5°C on Thursday, an official of the Meteorological Department said.
In the winter capital Jammu, officials said the sky would remain clear and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 20°C and 7°C, respectively, on Friday.
Officials said the sky would be cloudy in Leh for the next 24 hours and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 4°C and minus 12°C, respectively. The minimum temperature was minus 8°C in Kargil and minus 6.5°C in Pahalgam.
Meanwhile, one-way traffic was restored on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway. Traffic Department
officials said the traffic was allowed to move from Jammu to Srinagar.
“Keeping the road conditions in view, no vehicle will be allowed to move in the opposite direction today,” an officer of the Traffic Police said.
The highway was shut on Monday following landslides at many places in Banihal and Ramban due to heavy snowfall on the 300-km-long mountainous road which is the only surface link connecting Kashmir with the rest of the country.
