IIT-Mumbai team to inspect Nandani tunnels

A team of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Mumbai will soon visit Jammu to inspect the leakage in the Nandani tunnels on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway.

Soon after a report was published in Kashmir Post about the leakage developed in all four tunnels at Nandani, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) inspected the tunnels and directed the contractor to repair it immediately.

The contractor started the repair work, but the NHAI team observed that the tunnel was leaking at new points too. “Our technical team after inspecting the tunnels observed that the tunnels had developed new points of leakage. To rectify the fault, we have consulted IIT-Mumbai,” said Ajay Kumar, Project Director, NHAI, Jammu.“A team from IIT-Mumbai will soon visit Jammu to inspect the tunnels and plug the leakage, which is occurring every year,” he said.
The tunnels had developed some leakages last year as well, which were repaired by the project contractor.

Four tunnels located beneath the Nandani wildlife sanctuary over a stretch of 1.4 km were opened to traffic on January 3, 2015. It developed leakage during monsoon last year, creating panic among travellers on the Jammu-Udhampur highway.
