Protesting cow slaughter, UP police officer killed by villagers

A police officer was killed by a mob in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr after hundreds of people attacked the district’s Syana police station. Initial reports said the villagers had gathered outside the police to protest cow slaughter and threw stones.

At a Press conference later, UP’s additional director general of police Anand Kumar said the police officer had died in firing from villagers. Later, a local resident Sumit was also shot and was shifted to a hospital in Meerut where he succumbed to injuries, Kumar said, according to news agency ANI.

“One police inspector has died during the clash,” said Bulandshahr district magistrate Anuj Jha, according to news agency ANI.

A senior Uttar Pradesh police officer said the incident took place around a little before 11 noon.

The officer said some people had earlier complained about a case of cow slaughter in the forested area near the village. “On this information, the police and executive magistrate reached the spot,” the officer said.

But for some reason, the people started getting agitated over the lack of what they perceived was inadequate police action and started loading the remnants of the animals in their tractors.

Soon, the mob of villagers, numbering around 300-400 reached the police station, Anand Kumar told NDTV.

In the stone throwing that followed, several policemen including the police station chief were injured.

Inspector Subodh Kumar Singh was rushed to the hospital but doctors said, he was brought dead.

Police officers said the situation is under control and were investigating how the incident took place.
