Unchecked Stray Dog Menace Continues to Pester Srinagarites

The unchecked stray dog menace in Srinagar is causing widespread fear and anxiety among the people. Residents of various parts of the city have complained of packs of stray dogs roaming the streets, posing a threat to their safety.

In the Downtown area, dozens of stray dogs can be seen roaming in packs, making it difficult for people to move around freely. “We are unable to roam freely in the presence of stray dogs,” said Ishfaq Ahmed, a resident of Nowhatta. “Unless there is a proper mechanism to check the menace, people will continue to suffer.”

The locals say that the stray dogs have become increasingly aggressive in recent months. “There are daily attacks of dogs on commuters, particularly those traveling on two-wheelers,” said Kaisar Ahmad, a local from Hazratbal. “I was myself attacked on a two-wheeler last month near SKIMS Hospital and had to go for treatment.”

The locals are also concerned about the health risks posed by the stray dogs. “The stray dogs are often seen scavenging in garbage heaps, which makes them a potential carrier of diseases,” said Ahmed. “We are living in fear of contracting rabies or other diseases.”

The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has been promising to address the stray dog menace for several years, but so far, no concrete steps have been taken. The SMC has recently started the operations at a new dog sterilization facility in Tengpora, but the locals say that this is not enough.

“The SMC needs to set up more dog sterilization centers and conduct regular awareness campaigns to educate people about the importance of not abandoning their pets,” said Ahmed. “The authorities also need to create more green spaces and parks in the city, which will provide a safe space for stray dogs to live and play.”

The stray dog menace is a serious problem that needs to be addressed urgently. The SMC and the other authorities concerned must take immediate steps to control the population of stray dogs and ensure the safety of the people of Srinagar.

In addition to the measures mentioned above, the following can also be done to address the stray dog menace:

  • Provide food and water for stray dogs in designated areas.
  • Organize adoption drives to find homes for stray dogs.
  • TNR (trap, neuter, release) programs can also be effective in reducing the stray dog population.

It is important to remember that stray dogs are not inherently dangerous. They are often just hungry, scared, and looking for a place to belong. With the right care and attention, they can be loving and loyal companions.
